We have all been told from time to time to “be thankful you have a roof over your head.” When you become a homeowner, you realize how the roof plays a vital role in safeguarding your home from rain, wind, storms, and extreme temperatures. Because of this, you should be paying close attention to your roof and making sure it is in great shape.
Roof leaks happen, it is just what comes with being a homeowner. They are frustrating because of the damage it can cause to your home. It is also very common for roof leaks to go unnoticed for quite some time. Unfortunately, they are noticed when there is already a significant amount of damage done to your home.
As a homeowner, you need to be alerted to avoid these situations. Follow these tips for prevention measures:
Have regular roof inspections – Have a trained professional inspect your roof. This is essential in spotting early signs of roof damage.
Pay attention to roof flashings – Without good, secure flashings around chimneys, vents, wall/roof junctions, skylights, water can enter a home and cause damage to your walls, ceilings, insultation and even electrical systems.
Maintain gutters and downspouts – Gutters and downspouts that are full of leaves and debris will cause water to back up under your roof shingles causing potential leaks and water damage.
Do not block ventilation – Proper attic ventilation will help prevent structural damage caused by moisture and increase roofing material life.
Keep trees and bushes away – Leaves and falling limbs can cause moisture problems from algae and rot, damage to roof tiles and clogged gutters.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, deep fryer fires cause an average of five deaths, 60 injuries, and more than $15 million in property damage each year. Deep fryers are great for cooking up some delicious food for gatherings, etc. But frying is more dangerous than any other types of cooking because it involves cooking oil and grease. Not to mention, deep fryers involve larger quantities of hot cooking oil, so it creates a higher risk of injury and loss.
To avoid a fire, please follow these safety tips provided by The National Fire Protection Association:
Always use cooking equipment tested and approved by a recognized testing facility.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions and code requirements when installing and operating cooking equipment.
Plug cooking appliances directly into an outlet. Never use an extension cord for a cooking appliance as it can overload the circuit and cause a fire. Watch what you heat!
The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the deep fryer.
Do not use too much deep-frying oil. Having too much will result in excessive spillage.
Stay alert! To prevent cooking fires, you must be alert.
Keep the deep fryer clean and change cooking oil regularly.
Keep pets away to prevent them from knocking over the deep fryer or knocking something onto or into the deep fryer.
Keep anything that can catch fire – potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, boxes, food packaging, towels, or curtains – away from your deep fryer.
If you happen to have damage from a fryer fire, we have specialized equipment, specific training, and certifications that allow us to restore your home to pre-fire condition "Like it never even happened."
The last thing anyone wants to have happen is their home catch on fire. Along with the obvious safety concerns, residential fires can cause extensive property and contents damage, stress for the homeowner and residents, and create a large financial burden. To reduce the risk of all these things, there are quite a few prevention steps that can be taken:
Periodically check the power cords of all appliances (Refrigerator, Clothes Dryer, Dishwasher, etc.) – Damaged or frayed cords are a prime place for fires to start. Making sure the cords are in correct working order reduces this likelihood.
Clean and Maintain your Clothes Dryer and Vents – Clogged dryer filters and dryer vents not only trap heat from your machine but provide the perfect ignition source for fires. It is recommended to clean out the dryer filter after every load, and occasionally clean out vent hoses.
NEVER leave unattended items on the stove or range top – Something as simple as a towel too close to a burner, coupled with an accidental bump of a knob, can lead to a massive fire situation. While cooking, be mindful of the stove and surrounding area.
Consider electric candles instead of traditional – Candles are a common fire starter within a home. Using electric, battery-operated candles, instead of traditional flame candles eliminates this risk.
Children in the home? Talk about and teach fire safety – Playing with matches or improperly using appliances can lead to a fire disaster. Make sure your children understand some of the possible causes of accidental fire, and ways to prevent this from happening.

Even a flooded toilet has the potential to include black water. While the first inclination may be to grab some towels and start mopping it up, doing so could spread contaminants. Hiring a professional water remediation expert can ensure that the process is done correctly and nothing is left behind. Signs you should avoid the mess and call for help include:
Multiple rooms are flooded.
The source is clearly from a sewer or septic tank backup.
The water has been sitting for more than 24 hours.
Besides cleaning up the mess, a professional with have the tools and knowledge to ensure a proper, efficient cleanup. The right team will quickly remove sewage dirt, prevent mold or other bacteria from spreading, and are better equipped to salvage more of your personal belongings, as well as components of the home.
Small Spills For minor issues, it is important to take precautions when tackling sewer cleanup on your own. Before starting the process, open windows to air the home out. Wear PPE, including eye protection, rubber gloves and disposable clothing. Any solids should be shoveled and placed in heavy-duty plastic bags for removal. A bucket can be used to remove standing water, and a wet/dry vacuum can finish off the remaining water. Any items that can be removed should be placed outdoors to dry out. All areas or items that have been affected should be thoroughly cleaned with a disinfectant. When it comes to sewer cleanup, the best bet is to get expert help to avoid unnecessary risks. They will quickly restore your home back to “Like it never even happened.”
Proper Precautions to Take When Addressing Water in Light Fixtures
When you think about water damage in your Aiken, SC, home, you likely think about the affect it can have on the structure of your house. However, there is one location that you may not consider. In some cases, you may end up with water in light fixtures. This can be dangerous, so make sure to take proper precautions when addressing the situation.
1. Turn Off the Electricity
The first thing that you should do if you notice water in a light fixture is to turn off the power to your home. Trying to turn off the light with a switch could be unsafe, so do not attempt to do this. Instead, you should find your home’s breaker box and shut off power to the entire house.
2. Turn Off the Water Supply
If the water is coming from a broken or leaking pipe, the next step you should take is to turn off the water supply to your house. This will prevent additional water from entering the home and causing more damage.
3. Contact Your Insurance Company
In most cases, water damage will be covered by your homeowners insurance, so you should contact your agent quickly to file a claim. Unless the water came from a broken pipe or appliance due to your own negligence, your insurance company will likely pay for the resulting damage.
4. Hire a Professional to Replace the Fixture and Make Repairs
Because water and electricity is a dangerous combination, you should never attempt to make these repairs on your own. Contact an emergency restoration service to repair any floor and ceiling damage as well as the leak or broken pipe. An electrician should replace the light fixture before you attempt to use it again.
If you notice water in a light fixture, you should have this taken care of right away. Do not ignore it, as this can cause bigger problems and can be a hazard to your safety.

If your employees or guests do not know where a fire extinguisher is located, it can make an already risky situation even more dangerous.
Monitor Smoke Detectors and Fire Alarms

If these systems are not running properly, you will not be alarmed in the event of a fire or smoke emergency situation. Ensuring that there is a clearly marked exit plan is essential for your building in the event that a smoke detector and fire alarm go off.
Host Safety Trainings
A vital step for fire safety preparedness is safety training for all people involved. By including a fire safety training course in your workplace, you will help the occupants know exactly what they should do if an emergency such as a gas leak, a fire, severe weather event, or flooding occurs. Having a plan in place will reduce panic and disorganization when time is of the essence.
Make Emergency Exits Obvious

A wet crawl space can create more problems than you might expect. It makes water damage less visible, but it also creates the perfect conditions for mold growth. The moisture also weakens the Aiken, SC, house's structural materials, creating greater damage as a result. Learn about the most common causes for water inside the crawl space so you can prevent an incident.
1. Overwatered Plants
You can accidentally flood the crawl space by doing something as simple as overwatering plants, especially those close to the house's foundation. Whether you use too much water or leave the hose or sprinkler running beyond the necessary time, the excess will seep into the house and reach the lower sections first. You can easily turn off the water to resolve this issue. You can spot this problem if you see water pooling near the affected area.
2. Poor Sloping Grade
Another factor that can result in a wet crawl space is the lack of proper grading around your house. Ideally, you want the grading to slope away from the building and towards the outer yard or the streets. This feature ensures that any incoming water flows away from the foundation, preventing flooding. Check the grade after winter, intense rainfall or an overwatering incident. If the slope is altered or missing, build it up between six to eight inches away from home.
3. Defective Plumbing
Another reason why you might find water inside your crawl space involves defective or broken pipes. Even if the leak or burst pipe is in the house's upper floors, the water will always trickle down. If you find water in the crawl space or lower area, conduct a detailed search to find the source and fix it. Hire a plumber if you are unable to find it.
You should deal with a wet crawl space fast before mold growth and water damage threatens your home. Identify these occurrences to avoid this situation and contact emergency remediation services if you find water in that area or anywhere else.
Home Maintenance Tips to Help You Prevent a Water Damage
Water damage can be a costly and devastating event. At SERVPRO of Aiken, SC, we have often found that careful maintenance can diminish the risk and costs of water damage restoration. The water damage restoration process can be stressful, but by following some simple home maintenance tips, you can help prevent flooding from structural or maintenance issues in your home.
1) Assess your water heater to minimize water repair risk.
Water heater issues are common when it comes to our emergency water cleanup calls in Aiken, SC. With regular maintenance, you can prevent a surprise water heater flood in your home. Make sure the water heater's thermostat is regulating the temperature properly to prevent pressure buildup that can cause a water leak.
If you notice an odd taste or odor in the water from your water heater, it may have rust or sediment buildup inside. Also, if your water starts to make strange noises, it could need inspection or replacement to prevent a surprise flood.
2) Inspect your appliance hoses and connectors for leaks and replace them if they start showing wear.
Look for any cracks, kinks, unraveling, wear, or corrosion on the hoses and connectors. If you find any damage, replace them immediately. Most manufacturers and plumbers also recommend replacing water hoses and connectors every 3-5 years to prevent surprise water damage issues.
3) Replace old caulking in your windows and doors to prevent wet areas and moisture around the windows.
We often get calls for mitigation work in Aiken, SC, for this kind of mitigation work. Caulking your windows can not only stop water leaks but also help to keep out drafts. It is a simple process that you can do yourself. Most window caulks should last about five years, but you should inspect your caulking every year and replace it if you notice any cracks developing or if you see it pulling away from the window.
You should also check your exterior door flashings for holes or rust that can allow water entry. If your doors are properly caulked, you can also help prevent premature flashing failure.

If your home suffers a strike, contact the fire department to check over your property. If you detect smoke, call 911 and evacuate everyone from the premises immediately.

Maintenance Can Protect Your Business From Storm Damage
Routine exterior maintenance of your Aiken, SC, commercial building can help the structure better withstand inclement weather. Whether you are anticipating strong thunderstorms or heavy snows, a strong exterior will keep your business protected.
Inspection: A thorough building inspection will alert you to any weaknesses or problems that make your building more vulnerable to storm damage. A full exterior inspection will cover all of the following areas:
Roof
Foundation
Windows
Doors
Brick, stucco, siding, etc.
Gutters and downspouts
The frequency of inspections depends on a variety of factors, including the age of the building and local weather patterns. At minimum, have the building professionally inspected once a year, ideally before the stormiest season. Make sure the building is checked for cracks in the walls and foundation, loose gutters and weak spots in the roof. A trusted building inspector can let you know what areas of your structure may need more frequent inspections. Even a building that passes an inspection can still be vulnerable to storm damage. If this happens, an experienced restoration service can get your property back to normal so that it can successfully weather the next storm.
Maintenance: In addition to routine inspections, it is important to keep your building maintained. Exterior maintenance involves more than simply repairing the issues discovered during inspections. Keep gutters and downspouts clear and make sure they are not loose. Remove debris from the roof. Pressure wash as needed to minimize fungal growth. Make sure all signage is securely attached to the building. The nearby landscaping also affects the structural integrity of the building and should be properly maintained. Keep limbs trimmed and make sure trees are healthy and strong to prevent them from damaging the building. Consider grading the lawn away from the building and installing plants and mulch to prevent flooding. Stormy weather can cause serious problems for your commercial building. However, a little routine exterior maintenance can prevent many situations.

Yell "Fire!" several times and go outside right away. If you live in a building with elevators, use the stairs. Leave all your things where they are and save yourself.
If closed doors or handles are warm or smoke blocks your primary escape route, use your second way out. Never open doors that are warm to the touch.
If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to your exit. Close doors behind you.
If smoke, heat or flames block your exit routes, stay in the room with doors closed. Place a wet towel if possible under the door and call the fire department or 9-1-1. Open a window and wave a brightly colored cloth or flashlight to signal for help.
Once you are outside, go to your meeting place and then send one person to call the fire department. If you cannot get to your meeting place, follow your family emergency communication plan.
Fire engulfs an automotive supply shop, destroying inventory consisting of mainly shocks, struts, starters, alternators, and batteries. The fire ignited due to a chemical container failure affecting surrounding items.
You may think that fire damage like this would put them out of business, but you'd be wrong. Replacing inventory is relatively easy, the hard decision here is locating a quality company to perform the services you need to restore the structure of your building. There are several unique challenges faced during different fire situations, and we have experience dealing with all of them.
SERVPRO technicians overcome various cleaning challenges, daily. A burning building consists of several complex reactions between different elements. We learn that fire damage presents different cleaning and restoration situations that depend greatly on how these different elements interact during the progress of a fire. When dealing with the removal of smoke residues, we consider several factors.
Type - More porous surfaces allow particles and odors to penetrate further and are harder to clean. Non-porous surfaces such as those covered in enamel paint are easier to clean than a flat latex paint would be. While synthetic fibers attract more residue than natural fibers, synthetics are easier to clean.
Age - As time progresses, old paint, fabrics, and carpeting become more porous, and adhesion to surfaces become weaker, making old surfaces harder to clean.
Heat - Generally, hotter fires make surfaces expand, allowing residue and odors to penetrate more efficiently. While heat also chars materials or melts the finish on a surface, making refinishing required to restore the surface properly.
Moisture - The right conditions help residues set faster and permanently stain surfaces. Fire suppression systems and Firefighting efforts, along with damp weather and normal condensation on various surfaces combine with smoke residues, causing surfaces to become discolored.
Material - Different materials produce different kinds of residues. Synthetic materials such as plastics and rubber create a wet, smeary residue that stains surfaces. Wood and other natural materials leave behind a dry residue that is easier to clean.
Air Pressure - As the temperature of fire increases, air expands, creating pressure systems that force smoke and soot into cracks and crevices.
Impingement - During a fire, the surrounding air becomes hotter, causing increased movement. This fast-moving air collides with surfaces throughout the structure, causing residues to collide with vertical surfaces, leaving behind more difficult stains.
With knowledge of these different factors that cause changes during a fire event, SERVPRO technicians work hard to deliver the services you need to restore your business to a quality preloss condition.
As a small shop owner, you would benefit from taking a time to educate yourself about the information and services that our company provides concerning commercial water damage restoration. Doing so could mean the difference between getting the services that you need to save a majority of your inventory from total loss and obtaining the incorrect services that simply don't do you any good.
Our professional technicians will make sure that you are properly informed throughout your repair and work hard to get it done right. It is our goal to limit any possible downtime and inconvenience to your daily customers.

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Aiken will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

In late March, the National Weather Service holds Severe Weather Awareness Week to educate people about the upcoming spring storm season.
Now that we’re deep into the spring storm season, it’s important to revisit the helpful information discussed during Severe Weather Awareness Week.
At SERVPRO we know how to fix your property, but we can’t fix you, so always protect your most important and irreplaceable assets--yourself and your loved ones.
To best protect yourself, you need to know what you’re protecting against. That’s why it’s important to know some weather terminology.
What’s the difference between a severe thunderstorm watch and a warning?
A watch is normally in effect for several hours and tells you that currently, weather conditions could develop into severe thunderstorms. A warning tells you that current storm conditions could get worse and include heavy rain and strong winds.
Once you recognize the concern, it’s time to make a plan. Having a plan in place takes away the panic when a severe weather event happens. Make sure you can answer these questions:
How will you communicate with your family?
Where will you meet?
What supplies do you need if you lose power and water?
Do your children know what to do if they’re not home or outside?
What precautions should you take when lightning is striking?
Who should you call if you are injured or your home is damaged?
Knowing what to do can make bad situations a little bit better because you can react quickly.
What should you have on hand in case of severe weather? Have an emergency kit stocked and ready. Here’s a list of supplies you should include:
First Aid kit
Flashlights and batteries
Phone charger and mobile power bank
3 day’s supply of food and water
Blankets to keep warm
Arming yourself with the proper knowledge and supplies for a severe weather event puts you well ahead of most people, who don’t prepare at all. We never think severe weather will affect us until it does. Don’t fall into this trap: be safe rather than sorry.

Why choosing the right extension cord is important-
Extension cords are a common and convenient way to bring power to electrical devices when outlets are not nearby. However, when used without proper care and caution, they can become fire hazards and pose serious risks to your safety.
Follow these tips below to help keep your home safe when using extension cords:
Selecting extension cords
Only buy cords that have been approved by an independent testing laboratory.
For outdoor projects, use only extension cords marked for outdoor use.
Read instructions for information about the cord's correct use and the amount of power it draws.
Select cords that are rated to handle the correct wattage of the devices with which they'll be used.
Consider the length you'll need, longer cords can't handle as much current as shorter cords of the same gauge.
Choose cords with polarized or three-prong plugs.
For use with larger appliances, choose thick, round, low-gauge extension cords. For smaller appliances and electronics, you can use thin or flat cords.
Using extension cords
Never remove an extension cord's grounding pin in order to fit it into a two-prong outlet.
Avoid powering multiple appliances with one cord.
Never use indoor extension cords outdoors.
Don't plug more than one cord together.
Don't run extension cords under a rug or furniture.
Don't bend or coil cords when they're in use.
Cover cord receptacles with childproof covers when not in use.
Never use extension cords that feel hot to the touch.
Caring for extension cords
Always store cords inside where they can remain dry.
Unplug extension cords that are not in use.
Throw away damaged cords immediately.
Pull the plug, not the cord, when disconnecting from the outlet.
Remember, extension cords are intended to be temporary wiring solutions. If you find you're using them on a permanent basis, this can create an unnecessary risk in your home.

A leaking water heater is always an inconvenient problem, especially when you were hoping for a warm shower after a cold day in South Carolina. Whenever they take place, however, when water heaters break, you need to act immediately. Take the following steps to prevent expensive damages.
1. Shut off power to the appliance.
If you have a gas water heater, the shutoff switch is probably a dial at the top of the thermostat. If you have an electric appliance, use the circuit breaker. Turning off power to the broken water heater is the best way to ensure safety for yourself, your family, and your home.
2. Shut off the water supply.
You should be able to find a water valve on your failed water heater. Turn it to the right in a clockwise motion until the water stops leaking (or gushing) out of the appliance. If the valve at the heater doesn't stop the water, use the main water supply nozzle for your home.
3. Contact professionals for repairs and cleanup.
There are many potential causes that can lead to a leaking water heater. Even if you're confident in draining the heated water, checking and operating the pressure relief valve, and rinsing out your tank, you may not recognize what caused the failure in the first place. Additionally, if you contact experienced water heater repair professionals, you may also have access to services such as preventing future trouble or repairing parts of the home affected by the flood of water. Finally, you may want to contact your insurance representative. Depending on the extent of the damages, your homeowners' policy may cover some of your costs.
After these three steps have been completed, you can turn the power and the water back on. Although a leaking water heater is an unpleasant experience, it may lead to valuable information about how to protect your Aiken, SC, home in the future.
Fire can cause more damage than meets the eye. Of course, the fire itself causes much of the damage to a home or business. Did you know that smoke can cause just as much damage too? Smoke and soot can permeate through walls, ceilings, upholstery, and air conditioning vents. Many of these spots are very hard to clean when not properly educated on the issues associated with fire damage.
Not only is there visible damage to the structure, but also damage that can be unnoticed. Structural damage can occur to support beams, weight-bearing walls, studs, etc. and these are places that you would not check unless you know how to properly restore a structure after this type of loss.
SERVPRO uses our advanced cleanup methods and detection tools to check from closet to closet, room to room, and floor to ceiling, to detect all fire and post-fire damages. We know where to check to make sure your HVAC system will not spread smoke and toxins after a fire. We will make sure that your insulation is intact and that the structure of your home is safe. If we detect any need for replacement and restoration, we provide a range of services, including building services, that can take care of any fire and water damage and debris.
Because secondary fire damage, such as water use from firefighting efforts can also be an issue, our specialists pay much attention to a full, detailed analysis of your home’s damage before making a plan of action and beginning cleanup and restoration.
Contamination is not always seen by the untrained eye. It can be hidden in places such as your HVAC (air conditioning and heating) systems. SERVPRO inspects the home from attic to basement, to ensure that all vents and air circulating systems are completely clean. If you were to neglect this part of fire damage cleanup, there is always the possibility of blowing toxic dust, ash, and soot, even on the microscopic level, into your cleaned home, effectively re-contaminating it and exposing residents to its dangers.
Our 24/7 Emergency Service line is at your disposal. Contact SERVPRO of Aiken anytime at (803)648-3936 for a quick response to your fire emergency, or to ask questions.
During a storm in the Aiken area, it is possible that your home or business may be damaged by flood water if the weather becomes severe. Because this is not quite the same as other water damage, you may be unsure of how to deal with it. The following is some information about this type of water that might be helpful to you.
1. Why is a Flood Different From Other Water Damage?
The reason that flood water is different from others is largely due to how it accumulates. While most water damage, such as that from leaks or broken pipes, comes from above, the water in a flood rises from the ground. As it does, it becomes category 3 water.
2. What is Category 3 Water?
When it comes to water contamination, there are three categories. Category 3 or black water, which includes water from a flood, has the highest levels of contamination. Because this water comes up from the ground, it mixes with dirt, debris and sewage. When this happens, it begins to carry waste, bacteria and harmful chemicals that can be hazardous to your health.
3. How Should You Handle It?
Because flood water is highly contaminated, it is not a good idea to try removing it on your own. Instead, you should hire a professional to thoroughly clean and sanitize the building. Any food or beverages that have been in contact with this water should be thrown away as they are no longer safe to consume. Protective gear should be worn at all times while handling category 3 water.
If your building has been affected by water or storm damage of any kind, you should have it taken care of right away to prevent it from becoming worse. If allowed to sit, moisture can contribute to mold growth and can cause materials to weaken. A professional cleanup and restoration company can sanitize the area, perform necessary repairs and salvage many affected items.
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following information:
Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce health effects.
Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation. Give SERVPRO of Aiken a call today!
A major storm can be devastating. If you experience one or choose to ride it out, you may be wondering what to do next. Here are some suggestions.
Safety First
Is everyone safe? If anyone needs medical attention, call 911. If not, carefully and slowly assess the home and grounds for broken glass, splintered wood, exposed nails, or anything else that can cause injuries. Be very careful moving anything, wearing work gloves if possible. Shut off all gas valves if you smell gas. If you see a power line down, stay far from it and report it to the police or your power company.
Record the Damage
Take photographs of the damage for two purposes. First, it helps you show your insurance company and restoration company the extent of the damage. Second, it helps you contemplate the damage after you leave the building.
Here are a few things you may want to focus your photography on:
Damaged windows and doors
Roof damage - tree limbs and other debris, standing water, damage to tiles or shingles, gutters and downspouts
Damage to HVAC components such as exterior heat pumps
Basement flooding
Water intrusion in the attic/ wet insulation
Damage to exterior siding
Burn marks that may have been caused by water infiltrating electrical outlets or cords, or by downed power lines
Damage to computers, printers, televisions, speakers or other electronic equipment
Call Your Insurance Company
As soon as you can, call your insurance company or agent and tell them all you can about the damage. Tell them you have photos that you can send them. They will send out an adjuster to assess the damages. Read your policy and ask questions about what is covered and the timeframe of your compensation. Remember that storm damage is covered by most residential and commercial insurance policies but flood insurance is a separate policy. They can also give you contact information for trusted contractors and help you avoid unscrupulous ones. Your insurance company can tell you if any aspect of your damage is covered by federal emergency aid programs as well. Keep any receipts related to the storm damage so that you can seek reimbursement.
Avoid Further Damages
To avoid storm damage getting worse, remove vulnerable items (especially electronics, wood furniture, etc.) from standing water and put them somewhere they’re more likely to dry out quickly. Hang up rugs. Carpets with extensive water damage will probably need to be replaced. As soon as you can, call a water clean-up and restoration company. They have special equipment, experience and methods to stop further damage and begin the restoration process immediately.
If your Aiken home or business has suffered storm damage, call SERVPRO of Aiken. Our highly-trained restoration technicians have the experience and equipment to restore your and get everything back to like-new condition.
When the temperatures drop to below freezing there is always a chance of a pipe burst.
Insulate pipes.Pipe insulation in your home's crawl spaces and attic helps even if you live in a climate where freezing is uncommon. Exposed pipes are most susceptible to freezing. Remember, the more insulation you use, the better protected your pipes will be.
Use heat tape or heat cables.Heat tape or thermostatically controlled heat cables can be used to wrap pipes. Be sure to use products approved by an independent testing organization, such as Underwriters Laboratories Inc., and only for the use intended (exterior or interior). Closely follow all manufacturer's installation and operation instructions.
Seal leaks. Locate and thoroughly seal leaks that allow cold air inside. Look for air leaks around electrical wiring, dryer vents and pipes, and use caulk or insulation to keep the cold out.
Secure outdoor hoses, valves and faucets. Before winter hits, disconnect garden hoses and, if possible, use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets. This reduces the chance of freezing in the short span of pipe just inside the house.
Let water drip. A trickle of hot and cold water might be all it takes to keep your pipes from freezing. Let warm water drip overnight when temperatures are cold, preferably from a faucet on an outside wall.
Adjust the thermostat. Keeping your thermostat set at the same temperature during both day and night also reduces the risk of frozen pipes. During extreme cold, this also helps reduce the strain on the furnace.
Open cabinet doors. This allows heat to get to un-insulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.

SERVPRO of Aiken knows what to do if mold grows in your home.
It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.
If the right conditions exist, mold will grow. Those conditions include:
Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.
Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.
If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Aiken to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.
If you suspect mold, call us today at 803-648-3936.
What to Do:
Stay out of affected areas.
Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
Contact SERVPRO of Aiken for mold remediation services.
While the kitchen is the most common room for house fires, dryer fires are another common problem. The heating of the dryer combined with lint build-up can cause your dryer to burst into flames. A lint fire is scary, but there are steps that can be taken to prevent it.
Safety First
It's important to realize that even when the lint is properly cleaned from your dryer, there is still a chance of a dryer fire. For this reason, you should never run your dryer:
When you are sleeping
When you are not home
When you are going to be outside
Leaving your dryer unattended can cause the fire to spread further, which can cause extensive damage.
Vacuum Out the Lint Screen and Dryer
Your probably already clean out your lint screen every time you start a new load, however lint can get past the screen and eventually lead to a lint fire. Take your vacuum attachment and clean underneath and around the lint screen the best you can. Refer to your owner's manual to see how to safely vacuum out the inside of your dryer.
Cleaning the Hose
Pull out any lint you can reach after removing the hose from the back of your dryer and the wall. If you can't reach it all, use a dryer vent snake to push it all the way through. In addition, check the pathway from the hole in the wall to the outside of your home. Use the snake to ensure that all of the lint is out of the vent.
These steps can help to reduce your chances of a dryer fire. You should do this at least every six months, and more often if you do a lot of laundry. If you do experience a dryer fire, call SERVPRO of Aiken at 803-648-3936 and let our experts do what needs to be done to cleanup the mess.

Sediment builds up in the bottom of your heater during normal use and needs to be flushed to remove this buildup at least once a year.
Steps for Draining a Water Heater:
Turn off the power at the breaker box if you have an electric water heater, or if you have gas, set the gas valve to pilot.
Turn off the water supply valve on the top of the water heater.
Attach a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank.
Open the drain valve and allow about 30 minutes for the water to drain. Opening the pressure relief valve will help the tank drain faster.
Once all the water and sediment has drained from the water heater, close the drain and pressure relief valves and remove the garden hose.
Slowly open up the water supply valve to allow the tank to refill. You should also open a nearby faucet a little to allow the air from the tank to escape.
Once the tank is full and the air is out of the lines. Turn the breaker back on or set the gas valve back to on.
Doing this once a year can help extend the life of your water heater.
Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise "mold removal" and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

When your air filter is functioning properly, your HVAC system runs more efficiently. This conserves energy, lowering your utility bill. It also prevents the need for future repairs, which makes the upfront cost of replacement filters much more appealing.
2. It increases your HVAC system's lifespan.
A clogged filter can result in an overworked system, reducing your HVAC system's lifespan and turning "replacement time" into a necessity rather than an option.
3. It improves indoor air quality.
An old furnace filter loses its ability to trap pollutants and allergens. Dirty air is circulated, causing health effects. A new filter captures these allergens, making the air being circulated safe to breathe.
4. It reduces the need for repairs.
Regularly changing your HVAC system filter keeps other problems at bay. A clean filter means fewer repairs.
5. It increases energy efficiency.
As already mentioned, an efficient system produces efficient energy use. A clean filter helps prevent energy waste.
6. It helps keep your home clean.
Do you enjoy breathing fresh air? That is the air filter's job. A clean filter results in clean air, which results in happy skin, eyes and lungs.
How often should you change your HVAC air filter?
High-efficiency filters do not need to be changed as often as filters with low MERV ratings.
Your filter will likely need to be changed in the peak seasons of use, such as winter (heating) and summer (air conditioning). During these periods of frequent system use, you should check your filter monthly and replace it as needed.
Households containing pets or smokers typically require regular filter changes. More contaminants in the air (pet hair, dander, smoking byproducts, etc.) result in clogged filters.
Look for a manufacturer recommendation on your air filter's packaging that lists the filter's standard lifespan.
Picture this: You wake up in the middle of the night to find a busted pipe filling your house with water. It takes you 5 minutes to locate your main water valve and 2 more minutes to turn it off. That's 7 additional minutes of water flowing into your home.
It's a good idea to locate this valve when you move in and learn how it works to save yourself some time during an emergency. You may need to purchase a shut off valve key at your local hardware store. While you are at it, learn how to shut off your power and gas lines as well.
Another homeowner tip is to turn off your main water valve whenever you leave to go on vacation. This will prevent flooding if something should go wrong while you are out of town.
This flooded classroom was caused by a recent storm.

The hardwood flooring in this house buckled due to water damage that was not mitigated quickly.
SERVPRO of North Raleigh & Wake Forest News And Updates
Bursting pipes can really throw a wrench in the works of the day-to-day routine of running your household. The disruption can be a great concern and understanding what needs to be done can be of great help. Knowing what to do can be a great relief if such a situation occurs in your home, and can help prevent secondary damage to your property.
Secondary Damage and How To Prevent it
In the event of bursting pipes, swift and thorough treatment at the first sign of water can help minimize secondary damage. Following are some additional indicators.
Hardwood or subflooring that has buckled
Swollen and rotting sheet rock
Vinyl flooring that has begun to flake
Sour or disagreeable odors coming from the water
Black mold or evidence of spores
Cleaning Up Before Secondary Damage Happens
Secondary damage can come from allowing water to sit, even clean water. The water and the humidity that comes from it causes these problems. The water should be shut off, then call SERVPRO of Aiken to help with assessing the damage and making critical decisions. We can mitigate the damage and mess safely and completely.
Preventing Black Mold
The number one thing that can help prevent the onset of black mold is to thoroughly dry out the area. This includes drying out behind the walls, including studs and insulation if they have gotten wet. Industrial air movers may be needed to do a complete job of drying, and a dehumidifying unit is also helpful in controlling residual moisture. If you should experience bursting pipes in your home, take care to get the problem taken care of immediately. A dryer house is a safer house and will help to set your mind at ease.

How Contamination Level Changes the Mitigation Process
SERVPRO of North Atlanta / Buckhead News And Updates
All flooding is not the same. When your home in Aiken, floods, the first question water mitigation experts are likely to ask is the source of the water. Where the water comes from often indicates the level of contamination with which they must contend. It can tell them a lot about the process they need to use to completely restore your home to its original state.
Category 1
Category 1 water is considered clean. Your home may be flooded by a clean source:
Broken pipe
Leaking pipe
Busted supply line
The water damage caused by clean water must still be repaired, but the process is pretty straightforward. The area can often be dried without having to remove a lot of damaged material.
Category 2
If flooding occurs as the result of a leak from your refrigerator or an overflowing washing machine, this is considered a Category 2 incident. Some cleaning is required, because the water may contain a few contaminants. As long as the materials involved are not saturated and can be adequately disinfected, they may not have to be removed.
Category 3
Flood damage from a storm or sewer line falls within the third level of contamination. This can complicate the cleanup process extensively. Even if the walls, floors and ceilings affected by the flood are still structurally sound, any area the contaminated water touched may still have to be removed in order to ensure all the microbes in the water are gone. Just because it doesn't look or smell dirty, that doesn't mean that it isn't. Technicians know it is better to err on the side of caution when the water comes from a source that is likely contaminated. Understanding the mitigation process for flooding in your home can help you plan ahead. When you hear that the damage was caused by Category 3 water, you can adjust your expectations accordingly.
This dryer vent hose has a buildup of lint that needs to be removed to help prevent a dryer fire.
Steps to Prevent a Dryer Fire

This Aiken County home experienced fire and soot damage from a faulty chimney.
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Remember to test your smoke alarms monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.
Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house. Business owners should consult the local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detector requirements are met.
Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fire escape plan. A plan allows your family, employees or clients to escape quickly and safely in an emergency situation.
Review the following tips regarding smoke detector installation and maintenance. Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, including the basement.
Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.
Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. We have found it useful to change the batteries when daylight savings time either begins or ends. If an alarm "chirps," the battery is low and should be replaced right away.
Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
Just the Facts: Smoke Alarms
Three out of five fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or when the alarms are not working
Smoke alarm failures usually result from missing, disconnected, or dead batteries.
More than one-third (37 percent) of home fire deaths result in faulty alarms. Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half.
The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.

A fire, for the most part, can be avoided. No one wants a fire, and yet they happen every day. Here is a list of the top 5 reasons why a fire starts in a home.
1. Unattended cooking. It only takes a minute or two for burning pots and food to start a fire, and if you're away from the stove or oven, you may not know until too late that your kitchen is on fire. If you must walk away, be certain to ask someone else to watch the food, or turn off the burners until you return.
2. Heating. Space heaters - wonderful source of heat or supplemental heat, but they can become a danger when placed near flammable items, such as window treatments. If you have one that does not have auto shut-off when it is tipped over, be extra careful when placing the heater on a surface in your home.
3. Smoking in Bedrooms. Oh wow, did you know that 73% of all fatalities from a house fire comes from someone smoking in their bedroom? The burning can smolder unnoticed by someone who is asleep. The smolder can suddenly turn into a fire. When it comes to smoking in the bedroom - don't do it. It's hard to break a habit, but you can start a "new normal" and make a point of smoking in your kitchen, or better yet, outside.
4. Electrical Equipment. Check all of your appliances to ensure that none has a frayed cord. A frayed cord can start an electrical fire. The next most common reason for an electrical fire comes from overloading power outlets. Especially do not overload outlets with double adapter plugs. It's very risky and unsafe.
5. Candles. Candles are so nice to have - they smell wonderful, and give off a subtle ambience. As nice as they are, we sometimes leaves them burning unattended. It happens. We forget. Always blow a candle out when leaving a room or leaving the house. Ensure that you are not locating candles anywhere near flammable items, such as books, papers, curtains.
Be safe now and always. Think twice before doing something that could result in a fire.

It’s easy to remove stuck-on stains by pouring some warm water, a little baking soda, and a little dish soap in your blender and pulsing it for a few seconds. Afterward, give it a good rinse or pop it in the dishwasher to get it looking like new.
2. How to Make Your Sink Shine
Sinks are among the dirtiest places in the home.
The solution? After sanitizing with an antibacterial cleanser, polish those faucets and tap handles with some wax paper. Not only will this help remove water spots, the wax will help prevent future stains, as well.
3. How to Clean a Coffee Maker
Our coffee makers can be a veritable hotbed of bacterial activity.
So, how should you combat all that bacteria? A monthly vinegar rinse should do it. Just fill your coffee maker’s reservoir with a few tablespoons of white vinegar mixed with water, run it, and run it once more with only water to rid any lingering vinegar smell.
Our recent weather has had us going from one extreme to the other. It's 70 degrees one day, and 30 degrees the next! We've had more than a few nights when the temperature was at or below freezing.
Be aware that freezing weather may cause frozen or burst water pipes.
TIPS TO AVOID FROZEN PIPES
If you are concerned about your plumbing pipes freezing, it is helpful to leave a faucet running - not full blast, but just a little faster than a drip. Leave cabinet doors open so that room temperature air can reach the pipes. Also, if you are out of town or if the home or business is unoccupied, set your thermostat at or above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, you can keep pipes warm by wrapping them with pipe insulation; or in a pinch, use newspaper. If you have water supply lines in your garage, keep the garage doors closed.
IF PIPES ARE FROZEN (Not Burst)
If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle of water comes out, you may have a frozen pipe.
Shut off water immediately, as freezing may cause unseen cracks.
To help thaw pipes, apply heat to frozen section by using a heating pad or handheld hair dryer. You may also use a portable space heater, but ensure that it is kept away from flammable materials.
Once the pipes have thawed, slowly turn the water back on, and check for any leaks or cracks.
If you are not able to determine which pipes are frozen - if they fail to thaw - or if any have cracked or burst, call a licensed plumber.
Please see link below if you experience water damage, and call SERVPRO of Aiken for 24/7 emergency service.

Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
